And many ask the question about its SEO value. From Google perceptive Twitter links have nofollow attribute, which blocks the flow of PageRank, and carry little link value to help with organic rankings. But even nofollow links bring extra visitors to the target website which is the main goal of SEO. The other benefit is that Twitter is a social media tool which creates community and relationships. And implementing social media tools can go a long way in building Internet brand awareness and raising company profile.

Is SEO overrated

Some of the customers are getting frustrated and asking: Is SEO overrated? It is probably like asking is recession overrated? It all depends where you live, and how good or bad your finances are. Global economic downturn has caused many companies losing their sales. And many of them are cutting down marketing budgets to increase cash flow. However without their current spending for search engine marketing, the sales numbers could have been even worse. Also search engine optimisation is still one of the best strategy to bring traffic to the website and it deos not requite big marketing budget. SEO is not overrated but in some cases it is misunderstood and poorly executed marketing strategy.

Simple SEO Tips

Some may say - there is nothing simple about search engine optimisation. However, whether SEO is easy or not really depends on the particular website. In most cases SEO is not difficult as long as sufficient time and effort is invested into the project.
1. Create webpage titles related to targeted keywords.
2. Make your meta description unique for each webpage.
3. Use most important keywords in webpage name or URL.
4. Use cascading style sheets (CSS) rather then tables.
5. Add H1 tags preferably towards the top of each webpage.
6. Implement breadcrumbs functionality on your website.
7. Analyze your targeted keywords using Google suggest.
8. Implement the sitemap as text links.
9. Put CSS and JavaScript into external file.
10. Describe your images with the use of the alt tags.
11. Make sure your site logo alt tag contains your keywords.
12. Avoid automatic directory submission.
13. Find quality links to your website. Not easy.
14. Don't use same anchor text in all your inbound links.
15. Use deep linking to many webpages on your website.

Subdomains and SEO

Are there any benefits in using subdomains for the purpose of website search optimisation? The answer is yes, but with a few reservations. Subdomain is a domain that is part of a larger domain. For example "serivces.seo.com" is a subdomain of the "seo.com". At present, maximum two results can appear for a domain in the top 10. There is one exception that applies only to major portals such as Amazon, Ebay, About.com etc. Search Engine Land advice is to use subdomains when you have very disparate content that you feel searchers would feel relevant. For instance, if you have a travel site, it may make sense to use subdomains to categorize cities. Recommending further that for each search query that you want to list, make sure that you have one or two pages that you most want to rank for those terms and focus on optimizing those with keywords, anchor text, and links. Know that every page on your site won’t rank for each query, so decide which are the most relevant.

Search Engine Bias

The question of search engine bias can be easily verified by examining search results for popular words and phrases. MyHome.com.au owners are Microsoft and PBL which shows that having money is just not enough to succeed or should I say to survive in business. They have spent around 20 millions dollars in an attempt to capture a share of the $140 million online property advertising market. However MyHome found that it could not attract nearly enough online property searchers to at least break even. Unique visitors have reached half a million per month, while Domain.com.au has two million and Realestate.com.au more than four million unique browsers. The costs were too high and hence the decision to pull the plug. From SEO perspective the website has been only at around # 18 on Google while searching for "property for sale". Failure to get to top 5 listings as well as usabilty issues had a negative impact on the whole business model.

Search Events in 2008

If you are looking to learn more about SEO I have a list of upcoming SEO events and search marketing conferences. It is a very far fetched and unrelated search but few interesting results could be worthwhile to mention. First there is a Christian Web Masters Forum which expresses concern that "Christians should try and get a good explanation of the nativity and what Christianity is all about as the top search result for "Christmas" at Google." Yes I can see that, since Google shows as first result Wikipedia entry for Christmas and just below we can find North Pole Santa Claus website as a second result. But I think it will be hard to dismiss Santa Claus which has become very strong tradition. The other news is that we will be able to <a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=track+Santa+in+Google+Earth&meta="target=_"blank">track Santa in Google Earth on Christmas Eve in real time.

Harmful Web Content

In order to combat browser malware installations and make Internet safer, Google is displaying a brief message in the search results next to offending website as follows: <a href="http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=This+site+may+harm+your+computer&meta="target=_"blank">This site may harm your computer. From humble beginnings when a website ranked low on Google, the owner Giovanna Villanueva has managed to get to number one listing. By methodical application of many SEO techniques when searching for "<a href="http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=kitchen+cabinets+&btnG=Google+Search&meta="target=_"blank">kitchen cabinets" (very popular phrase in this category) her website pops up at the top of Google's very important first page, even ahead of one of the country's largest cabinetmakers, Merillat Industries. Siimon Reynolds is one of the executive directors in Photon Group Limited so it is a definite sign that SEO is taken more seriously and becomes a major strategy for big marketing agencies. It is the second acquisition of SEO business in last few months. In December 2006 Chris Dimmock has sold his search engine marketing company - Cogentis to BlueFreeway Limited. SEO companies consolidation is a new trend in Australia but it should not come as a surprise since in United States, big Madison Avenue marketing agencies have been buying SEO companies for last few years. According to Matt the main theme for Google in years to come will be personalization and localization. The ambition is to organize the world information and store data at Google with Gmail and other tools. Matt was also asked about the spam issue: "Matt answers: There was this guy who claimed there is no way his cloaking could be detected because he used “super duper” cloaking. His “super duper” cloaking had pages name “Doorway-Page-Alta-Vista”, my mom could detect that." And more about the definition of spam: Matt: That can be tough. Litmus test: what was the intent and how was it done. Spammy techniques – sneaky java scripts, techniques that are use help to determine the intent. Measuring how happy users are is important. Spam can be defined as noise, noise from your signal. Off topic spam – you type in your name and get porn. That is not in anybody’s interest. Cookie cutter sites that don’t add any value – 50 sites that there’s no diversity. No value add for the customer. There are definitely shades – some are more serious and some less." Matt was also asked about his favorite Non-Google tool. Yahoo site explorer was the answer.

SEO and Public Relations

John Andrews and Todd Malicoat in their recent posts have attempted to describe 16 reasons why people hate SEOs. I think it is very funny insight about what SEOs struggle with on a daily basis. Expert SEO not only makes you feel really stupid but is a Scary Thing too. "Your Expert SEO comes in and immediately everyone can see she knows her stuff. And your stuff. And his stuff. And that guy's stuff. Nobody is safe. This SEO person seems to hold a very broad yet very, very advanced expertise *and* is one of the most creative people you have ever met. This is scary." And about sacred cows "In fact, SEO Experts know that Sacred Cows make the best hamburger. Your SEO Expert says sell the cows and buy a few plastic cows to put out on the lawn at Christmas." If your comment is well-written the blog owner will follow it keenly. Adding questions in comments may enhance the post and start a longer discussion which will lead to clarification of the main subject. Your comments will also add quality back links to your blog which in turn will make your blog more visible on search engines. By adding comments bloggers feel encouraged to continue with their writing. On the other hand authors of nuisance comments know what they are doing. And their strategy never goes a long way, since they will be ignored at best or simply deleted and forgotten.

Practical SEO Workshop

We will be presenting an interactive SEO workshop on how to design and update the websites for search engine visibility. The end result is that things are hard to find and there is a lack of website functionally. On a bright side more government departments are conducting usability studies and improving their websites. One of the good examples is Australia.gov.au website. However in my opinion they should capitalize the link to business.gov.au on the left side. It is not a capital letter at the moment, possibly they refer to small business? Also search for <a href="http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&safe=active&q=australian+government&btnG=Search&meta="target=_"blank">Australian government on Google shows as a second result: " Not Found - australia.gov.au Australian Government Australian Government ... We're sorry, but there is no australia.gov.au web page that matches your request." That gives very unprofessional look. Also the third website on the list www.gov.au shows very poor title tag: Home - www.gov.au. There is still a big area for improvement here.

SEO Bootcamp Sydney

This year Search Engine Boot camp organized in Sydney on 30 November will be dedicated to SEO and SEM topics. In the <a href="http://www.w3.org/People/Berners-Lee/1991/08/art-6484.txt"target=_"blank">original post he said: "The WorldWideWeb (WWW) project aims to allow links to be made to any information anywhere. The address format includes an access method (=namespace), and for most name spaces a hostname and some sort of path. The WWW project was started to allow high energy physicists to share data, news, and documentation. We are very interested in spreading the web to other areas, and having gateway servers for other data. Collaborators welcome!"
The greatest thing is that his idea is available freely, with no patent and no royalties due, so it keeps spreading like a wild fire.

Myths about SEO

In the recent interview Laura Lippay, SEO Program Manager for Yahoo has been expressing concern about lack of education in the area of search engine optimization techniques. Quite often SEO propaganda headlines does not match with good skills and improved search engine results. Those are her words: "There always seems to be a lot of stuff going around that just does not have real proof to back it up. I do not really believe any of it until I can test it for myself. A lot of site owners, seem to think that all they need to do for SEO is slap a couple of keywords in a browser title and an H1 tag on their page and they will see results. The lack of education of SEOs and non - SEOs alike is disheartening sometimes. We still have a lot of work to do on the education front."

World Cup Live Search

During the World Cup 2006 Google offers live scores and live tracking of matches. Google has removed the German BMW website from its index and they have learned the hard way that fast SEO strategy does not work very well. The delisting lasted for only three days, and SEO community had a chance to see that no matter how big is the company they need to follow the Google guidelines in order to achieve good search engine positions.
BMW web designers had repeated the words "gebrauchtwagen" and "neuwagen" which means "used car" and "new car" many tens of times on the home page. They used two techniques: invisible text and keyword stuffing to boost the search engine rankings. I am referring here to Million Dollar Homepage designed by Alex Tew, a 21-year-old business student from England. Over 12 billion dollars will be spent this year in the United States alone. In Australia this figure is close to 90 million dollars. Many big companies like for example Procter & Gamble are cutting back on their TV ad spending, and increasing funds for Internet brand building. The main challenge for SEO companies is to ensure that the websites of their customers are appearing first in the search engine results when certain keywords for products or services are requested. However this will become increasingly difficult as more companies will enhance their websites to compete for top search results.

MSN Book Search

According to internal Microsoft research over 50 percent of online queries go unanswered on search engines. To address this issue Microsoft intention is to to launch MSN Book Search. This will greatly improve finding the exact information including the content from the books, academic materials, periodicals and other print resources. The idea of a book search in not new, since Google started its own Google Book Search called Library Project many months ago. And some people are attempting to explore this trend from a commercial perspective creating spam blog directories and generating lots of traffic to their sites where they usually have AdSense or other type of advertising. Just recently I have seen on Technorati big adds about making money from the blog by placing text links. So what is a spam blog? I guess it is all about where do we draw the line? It would be similar as a question: at which point a man who starts to lose hair becomes a bald man? Sorites paradox again.
For me one of the examples of spam blogging is what bloggers are doing with the keyword "<a href="http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&sa=X&oi=spell&resnum=0&ct=result&cd=1&q=failure&spell=1"target="_blank">failure". It is an old story I admit, but it will not go away. So, are we going to call all the tens of thousands of bloggers link spammers? I am not here to judge that. And I think that the First Amendment does guarantee freedom of speech and the freedom of links we can have on our blogs. And for those who don't like the results, they most likely missed out on this special sort of voting.

Interview with SEO Consultant

I share belief with Terrence Gordon from Performance SEO that Search Engine Optimization will become more of a controlled environment and less of a "wild west" as more companies realize its value and start investing larger sums of money. The three building blocks of such a site are:

-- Text: Use content that includes words and phrases your company's target audience is likely to type into search queries. If you're selling mountain bikes, that term should be everywhere -- in page headings, navigation buttons, photo captions and the like.

-- Links: A site's navigation scheme should be accessible, coherent and consistent so that spiders and humans can easily traverse it.

-- Popularity: A good site will prompt others to link to it. External links from reputable sites will enhance your Web site's ranking in search engines.

Why should a company bother to use SEO if it can buy pay-per-click ads?

A company can always buy pay-per-click (PPC) ads on search engines. These ads appear whenever users query specific keywords. However, JupiterResearch has found that the average company gets about 80 percent of its commercial search engine referrals from organic results and the rest from PPC ads. So while PPC ads can complement organic search results, particularly when doing seasonal promotions, they are no substitute.

How much should a company expect to spend on SEO consulting work?

It depends on the size of the Web site and the condition it's in, says Chris Winfield, president and cofounder of search engine marketer 10e20. Most of his company's clients sign up for a year's service, paying between US$5,000 and $15,000 per month, plus sometimes an initial, one-time fee, he says.

What should CMOs look for when evaluating SEO consultants?

In addition to checking the obvious -- references, expertise and resources -- it's critical to hire a consultant who abides by a search engine's SEO guidelines. Avoid search engine marketing firms that offer to elevate rankings for a low, one-time fee, since the only way to legitimately guarantee top positioning is with a PPC ad. Unscrupulous firms typically try to trick search engine spiders by employing so-called black hat techniques, such as stuffing a Web site with hidden keywords. When a search engine detects such a trick, it will ban the site from its index. Then no amount of SEO will make it appear.

Google Success and Failure

When searching the Internet one can find lots of optimism there. There is lots of speculation about why is that, but no one knows the full answer yet.
To find a better answer to links question use Yahoo link command linkdomain:www.yourdomain.com or MSN link:www.yourdomain.com and this will give you a better understanding of your link popularity.

Searching Books

With <a href="http://print.google.com"target=_"blank">Google Print and <a href="http://www.amazon.com"target=_"blank">Amazon Search Inside the Book you can have limited full text and full image access to hundreds of thousands of books. Like it or not, it will stay that way. And as long as advertising revenues are helping small web publishers it is a positive outcome for most of us. Since March 2005, Google allows to "accurately disclose the amount of Google's gross payments". If you wonder how much other websites and blogs are making from Adsense you can visit <a href="http://www.admoolah.com"target=_"blank">AdMoolah.com and query its earnings database. And consider to view the story in USA Today on: <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/news/2005-03-10-google-ads-usat_x.htm"target=_"blank">Google's AdSense a bonanza for some websites.

Benedict XVI and Internet

Before new pope, Benedict XVI, has choosen his name, the Internet domain name www.benedictXVI.com was already taken. The main reason was to stop spam related websites from adding large number of purchased links, to achive high rankings for their keywords from the date of launch. Only some websites are placed in the sandbox, but it happens more frequently for those websites which are seeking rankings for highly competitive keyword phrases. In order for your site to get out of the sandbox, you need to continue building strong incoming links, have good link anchor text, and add more keyword rich relevant content on your webpages. Google does not say much about sandbox effect, and when you search for <a href="http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=Google+Sandbox&meta="target=_"blank">sandbox term you will find Google Adwords Keyword Tool as the first result.

Yahoo supports Wikipedia

<a href="http://search.yahoo.com"target=_"blank">Yahoo Search engine will supply hardware and other resources to the Wikimedia Foundation Inc. to support that nonprofit organization's free <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org"target=_"blank">Wikipedia online encyclopedia. Yahoo Search also will feature abstracts of Wikipedia content at the top of relevant search results in the form of shortcuts, which are either factual information or links to factual information. As an example when you type in Google the two word phrase <a href="http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&q=business+world&meta="target=_"blank">business world you will see that blog www.blogbusinessworld.blogspot.com ranks # 5 out of 439,000,000 results, just few positions behind BBC News. We could debate of the importance of the search results but the fact is there are many far wealthier organizations, with expensively designed traditional websites, ranked behind that blog. And as everyone knows higher traffic to the blog or website equals higher sales revenue.

Customer Satisfaction

Below are some of our customers search engine positioning results. If you are serious about getting good rankings in the search engines so that people can find you, you need an innovative approach. Standard solutions are designed for all types of websites which means that it is not guaranteed to work for your company particularly if your business is in a competitive arena.

2. Personal and fine tuned search engine optimization ensures that content on a website is unique and will be recognised by the search engines. Software driven solutions generate 1000's of pages which in effect is the same content. This too will be recognised by the search engines and potentially be rejected from the database.

3. The only approach for long term success in the search engines is to optimise your company's home site. This is because a micro site approach is disapproved by search engines. It is defined by Google on their website.

4. Hidden text or cloaking where search engine spiders see different content to the user is another method disapproved by search engines.

5. All relevant keywords are important to gain optimum exposure for your company.

6. A good SEO company will be able to provide a track record of successes over a long period of time.

7. A dedicated SEO company will be proactive in finding areas where improvements can be made.

See Advanet results here: Customer Satisfaction

Return to SEO Consulting Australia Home Page.

Pay Per Click Ads

Pay Per Click Listings PPC is less expensive than banner advertising. The total number of objects on this page is 14 - consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external objects. Replace graphic rollovers with CSS rollovers to speed display and minimize HTTP requests.
TOTAL_IMAGES - Caution. You have a moderate amount of images on this page (9 ). Consider using fewer images on the site or try re-using the same image in multiple pages to take advantage of caching.
TOTAL_CSS - Caution. The total number of external CSS files on this page is 4 , consider reducing this to a more reasonable number. Combine, refine, and optimize your external CSS files. Ideally you should have one (or even embed CSS for high-traffic pages) on your pages.
TOTAL_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of this page is 13205 bytes. This page should load in less than eight seconds on a 56Kbps connection - or 3.43 seconds. Assuming that you specify the HEIGHT and WIDTH of your images, this size allows your page to display content in well under 8 seconds, the average time users are willing to wait for a page to display without feedback.
IMAGES_SIZE - Congratulations, the total size of all your images is 4060 bytes, which is less than 15K.
