Thoughtful Comments

Thoughtful comments on a subject of the post may benefit your blog in more ways than one. If your comment is well-written the blog owner will follow it keenly. Adding questions in comments may enhance the post and start a longer discussion which will lead to clarification of the main subject. Your comments will also add quality back links to your blog which in turn will make your blog more visible on search engines. By adding comments bloggers feel encouraged to continue with their writing. On the other hand authors of nuisance comments know what they are doing. And their strategy never goes a long way, since they will be ignored at best or simply deleted and forgotten.

  1. Don't links in most blog comments now include nofollow in their tags by default? I ask this because of your mention of building back links...

  2. That is a valid point. In 2005 Blogger and later Wikipedia on discussion pages introduced nofollow attribute which tells a search engine "Do not score this link" rather than "Do not follow this link." Also other blog software use redirects where instead of displaying a direct hyperlink submitted by a comentator, the software displays a link to a script on its own website that redirects to the correct URL. But in spite of all that, there are many blogs which have meaningfull comments and discusions and they cross-promote each other.

  3. Most of us have realized it's a negative to build a "fortress" around our comment box. If you want to encourage traffic, then open up and NOT suffer from spam-phobia. Anti-spam software can take care of that. Make it easy for visitors to place comments on your blog. It's now considered good practice. Have a nice day.
